Join me for Oaxaca’s exciting Day of the Dead celebration and develop the craft of making memorable and personal travel images. As visual artists and travelers, we can use creativity to tell the story of the cultures and customs of our planet. This workshop is designed to immerse digital photographers of all levels in a unique approach to personalized storytelling through photography. Centered around this important Mexican holiday, you will experience rituals, ceremonies and vibrant symbolism that will infuse your week with history and graphic inspiration. We will learn to make single and composite photographs that depict the passion and imagination of what we feel, not just what we see through the lens.
Our week will begin with a review of wonderfully creative images from many artists, where we will examine different approaches to the making of highly personal travel, cultural and environmental images. Then, through exercises in self-discovery and artistic intent, we will visualize a unique personal direction. We will shoot in various locations as well as visit local artists and cultural sites to renew our ideas and learn from the interactive workshop environment. The events surrounding Dia de los Muertos will be an amazing cultural experience to witness and interpret through our eyes and minds.
Back in the digital lab, we will learn the optimization of images and alternative effects techniques. We will also reference traditional historical photographs, interpretive and alternative processes and cameras to enlarge our visual palettes. I will provide patient guidance as you create new images that reflect not only the unique culture and environment of Oaxaca, but also reflect the personal process of your individual creative growth. Our group interaction and discussions will further enhance our learning experience.
Students should have at least basic knowledge of Photoshop CS tools and familiarity with their laptop computer for this workshop. Using an open mind, any digital camera you have, and Photoshop, you will have the tools to explore exciting new artworks. A brief list of suggested materials will be provided to all who enroll, as well as a downloadable Photoshop “Essentials” lesson. Students will receive a printed workbook and CD containing techniques, ideas and reference materials for their use. Please contact David directly with any questions regarding the workshop content.
