ABOUT OAXACA, THE CITY

Oaxaca is a unique city which is at the crossroads of change as it continues to grow as an international center for the arts.

Known as the city of light, Oaxaca is also a unique blend of the old and the new worlds. Modern Oaxaca is home to hundreds of contemporary artists in all disciplines who draw inspiration from the traditions of the 16 indigenous cultures that continue to thrive in the surrounding area. Located in southwest Mexico, it is one of the most beautiful colonial cities, which for the last 13 years has developed an international art scene along with the traditional folk art of this region.

In 1987, Oaxaca was declared a World Heritage Site and considered to be of outstanding value to humanity by UNESCO. It has a number of renowned museums that house private collections and libraries important to Mexican art and history. Some of these institutions include: Santo Domingo Cultural Center, The Institute of Graphic Arts, The Manuel Alvarez Bravo Photography Center, The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Rufino Tamayo Museum, La Casa de la Cuidad, the Philately Museum, El Centro de las Artes de San Augustin, Etla, and the Papel Oaxaca paper factory in San Augustin,
